Today we made grape juice from the excess of grapes in my parents greenhouse. We pressed about
50 liters of juice today. No, we have no intention of making wine from it ;).
First the grapes are washed and all the bad ones removed. There are quite some mouldy ones
due to the bad August weather. This washing and cleaning is done 2 to 3 times to be sure we
use only good grapes.
Once cleaned the grapes are crushed. This was Linus' job. At that moment a teaspoon vitamine C
is added to prevent oxidation.
The crushed grapes go in a hydraulic press, the thing you see on the right. Inside is a kind
of rubber balloon that swells up by means of tapwater. The grapes are pressed against the filter
by the swelling balloon.
The juice is poured into individual containers which are stored in a freezer. That way we have
fresh juice without any preservatives or heat treatment.
